Even a Trip to the Store Requires Preparation

I recall one day when our son was just a few days old, or even just over a week old, when we were taking him to a friend’s place so she could meet him. We ended up going several hours later than expected. Why? Things just kept coming up, and when we were getting ready to leave, another diaper change, nap, or feeding was due. Showing up late to someone who prides themselves on being punctual can be hard to swallow. However, I realized then that the things we take for granted change quickly after becoming parents.

The days of simply grabbing your keys and going out for dinner, to the gym, or even to the store around the corner are gone. Even if it’s just for a while. Before having children, spontaneity is easy. Want to grab a cup of coffee from the coffee shop? Sure, no problem. Just get in your car and go. Need some items from the store? Within minutes, you’re out the door. A quick workout at the gym? Sure, go ahead. These activities don’t require much planning. That is until you have children. After that, endless planning and preparation are involved, even for the most minuscule activities. If you don’t plan on taking your child, then of course, either your partner or a reliable caregiver must be present.

You’ll need to pack that diaper bag. Make sure to have enough diapers, wipes, extra clothes, toys/entertainment, burp cloths, milk/formula, snacks, and anything else your child needs. If you don’t think you need it, guess again. Things can change quickly when it comes to babies. When they need something, everything else goes on lockdown.

Activities of all types begin getting scheduled around the baby’s needs, whether it’s nap time, bathroom breaks, feedings, or your child’s mood. 15-minute shopping trips can turn into adventures that last an hour or two. I’m not exaggerating when I say this and have definitely lived it. Getting out of the house becomes a team effort. While your partner changes a diaper, you can prepare the milk or formula. While you get the car prepared, your partner can pack the diaper bag. And just when you think you’re ready to leave the house, oops, another diaper change is needed. Oh, and if any of it gets on their clothes, you’ll need a new outfit too.

Yes, things will become more challenging, but eventually, you will develop a system. You will start keeping supplies in the car, prepare diaper bags ahead of time, even multiple diaper bags, and start anticipating what your child will need based on the time of day. Yes, the spontaneity might be gone, but the fun is just beginning.
